Florida Window Tinting Laws
Most Florida window tinting laws are based around a concept called VLT, or visible light transmission. This refers to the percentage of visible light that can get through the window. In sedans, your windshield may have non-reflective tinting above the AS-1 line of the manufacturer. Your front side windows must have a VLT of at least 28%. Your back-side windows must have a VLT of at least 15%, and your rear window must also have a 15% VLT.
For SUVs and vans, the VLT is the same for the windshield and front side windows. For back side windows and the rear window, the VLT rating for these classes of vehicle must be at least 6%.
Some window tinting is also reflective, helping to reduce interior glare and heat by reflecting light away from the car. The law also restricts the amount of reflectiveness your window may possess. For sedans, vans, and SUVs, your front side windows cannot have more than 25% reflectiveness, and the back-side windows must have no more than 35% reflectiveness.
Other Window Tinting Regulations in Florida
Other window tinting laws in Florida exist to increase the safety of drivers, passengers, and others on the road. Every vehicle must have dual side mirrors to improve visibility in case you have tinting on the back windows. There are no restrictions on colors of tint in the state, and manufacturers of tinting film don’t have to be certified to sell tinting film.
You must have a sticker on the inside door jamb of the driver’s side, identifying the legality of your tinting. Finally, there are special medical exemptions for those who need tinted windows beyond the standard regulations. It’s also always a good idea to check with your local authorities to get information on how tinting laws will be locally interpreted.
