HR-V vs EcoSport: Balanced Performance

2019 Honda HR-V vs Ford EcoSportThe perfect crossover performance epitomizes balance. You want a powertrain that is as peppy as it is efficient. In other words, you’re looking for horsepower and fuel economy.

The Honda HR-V charges out of the gate strong with its standard 1.8L inline 4-cylinder powertrain, which produces 141 horsepower and 127 lb-ft of torque. Since it’s paired with a standard continuously variable transmission, which is known for its shorter and smoother gear ratios, this crossover is able to maintain an EPA-estimated 34 MPG highway and 28 MPG city.1

The Ford EcoSport starting powertrain is a bit smaller at 1.0L. This EcoBoost® 4-cylinder can only produce 123 horsepower and 125 lb-ft of torque, so it tends to fall behind as early as lap one.

Not only that, but the EcoSport doesn’t offer a continuously variable transmission. Its traditional 6-speed automatic only helps it to maintain an EPA-estimated 29 MPG highway and 27 MPG city.

Spacious Interiors

Between the kids in the back seat and all that luggage behind the second row, space in your crossover can fill up fast.

In this respect, the EcoSport is a bit snugger. In total, it offers 91.1 cubic feet for passengers, as well as 50 cubic feet behind the first row for cargo. As long as you configure your seating and cargo arrangements smartly, everyone should have room.

The added space is a given in the larger Honda offering, however. With 100.1 cubic feet for passengers and 58.8 cubic feet behind the first row for cargo, fitting everything in is a snap.

Driver-Assisting Safety Makes Things Easy

2019 Honda HR-V interiorSafety in cars has advanced to such a degree that many now offer driver-assisting suites of technologies that can monitor the roads for you. They can predict collisions and sense hazards using sensors, then send warnings or act autonomously to help avoid them.

The EcoSport offers some smart features in higher trim levels, such as an available Reverse Sensing System and BLIS® with Cross-Traffic Alert. The former helps you avoid objects while backing up, and the latter monitors blind spots for you.

Those Ford features are greatly outnumbered by the smart tech available in the Honda Sensing® suite, which can be found in the 2019 HR-V. This includes a Lane Keeping Assist System and Adaptive Cruise Control—two features that cannot be found in the competitor.

HR-V vs EcoSport: Final Thoughts

On its own, the Ford EcoSport manages to pack a sizeable punch in a small package. However, when comparing it to the bigger, more powerful 2019 Honda HR-V, it just seems to fall short.
